City Incite YouthBuild

What You’ll Learn

City Incite YouthBuild is very similar to B.U.I.L.D. Construction. Like B.U.I.L.D. Construction, City Incite YouthBuild also provides career training and personal development with a focus on the construction industry. Also, like B.U.I.L.D., the program helps participants get a job at the end.

YouthBuild is a national program. City Incite is one of only 2 organizations in the Chicagoland area to run this well-respected and rigorous program. This came about in 2016, when City Incite, in partnership with Metropolitan Family Services, was awarded the 2016 Department of Labor YouthBuild Grant.

Rehabbing in the Community

A lot of the hands-on experience comes from the opportunity to work on real job sites rehabbing properties in Chicago communities. Currently, most of our rehabbing is done in Englewood and the Roseland Community. So as you’re learning construction, you’ll also be creating affordable, quality housing for residents.

Also, like B.U.I.L.D. Construction, some of the things you’ll learn are:

  • How to use hand tools and power tools
  • How to work at a site safely including proper gear and clothing
  • Intro to construction math
  • How to read documents and drawings
  • Proper handling of hazardous and non-hazardous materials

In addition to hands-on training in the construction industry. City Incite and Metropolitan Family Services provide leadership training and case management.

Outcome

YouthBuild also offers:

  • Civic engagement opportunities
  • Assistance with placement in college
  • Registered apprenticeships
  • Job placement services
